Dr. Alawashez's Bio:

Dr. Abdulrahim Alawashez is a general surgeon who currently practices out of St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Licensed by a number of medical organizations, including the Medical Council of Canada and the United States Medical Board, Dr. Alawashez also currently serves as an assistant professor in general surgery at Dalhousie University in Halifax, as well as a principle research investigator in protocol and instrument development for the Surgery Department at the same university.  Dr. Alawashez’s particular areas of specialty include gastrointestinal and endoscopy  surgery. Prior to Dr. Alawashez’s position at St. Martha’s Hospital, the doctor served as attending general surgeon in a number of hospitals throughout Canada.  In addition to his various medical licenses, Dr. Alawashez has earned several certifications over the course of his career, including certification from the American Board of Surgery in 2013 and a Specialist Certificate in General Surgery from the College de Medecins du Quebec in 2011. Dr. Alawashez is also a member of a number of medical organizations, two of which include the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).  Dr. Alawashez earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. Following a medical internship in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Alawashez moved to Canada and completed an extensive, five-year medical residency program in general surgery at McGill University Health Center in Montreal. After successfully completing this residency, Dr. Alawashez supplemented his postgraduate training by completing two fellowships, one a clinical and research fellowship in therapeutic endoscopy and MIS surgery at Dalhousie University; the other, a clinical fellowship in flexible surgical endoscopy and weight loss surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.  Over the years, Dr. Alawashez has supplemented his formal medical training with a number of field-related activities. He has attended several endoscopy-focused workshops over the years, one of the more recent ones being a workshop in advance skills in therapeutic endoscopy at a hands-on course for senior surgery residents at Dalhousie University.  Besides his dedication to medicine, Dr. Alawashez has always held an overarching passion for helping others and improving the lives of those in his community. This is one reason that motivated him to join the Canadian Red Cross as an Emergency Response Unit delegate, a role which he is currently actively involved in. Besides his service with the Red Cross, Dr. Alawashez also serves as a Peer Review Member for The Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ), as well as a Program Committee Member for The Society for the Surgery of Alimentary Tract (SSAT). Prior to his medical career, Dr. Alawashez helped the Saudi Arabian Red Crescent as a Med Tech Ambulance Volunteer in Saudi Arabia.
